Study Abroad Outcomes: The University of Illinois Vienna Diplomatic Program

Professor Robert Pahre (Political Science, University of Illinois) has published a new paper, "The Vienna Diplomatic Program: Goals and Outcomes in a Non-Traditional Study Abroad Program" in the EU Center’s Working Paper series.

The paper discusses findings from several years of offering a semester-long study abroad program focusing on experiential learning with a capstone research project.

Pahre’s paper was presented as part of a panel on the Austria-Illinois Exchange Program (AIEP) at a conference in Vienna, 18-19 November 2010. The conference, "Impacts: Does Academic Exchange Matter?—Cultural Diplomacy, Scholarly Internationalism, and American Studies since Word War II," was hosted by the Austrian-American Educational Commission, known as the Austrian Fulbright Commission, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Commission.

Other University of Illinois colleagues invited to present on the AIEP panel and their topics were:
•    Bruce Murray, "Austria-Illinois Exchange Program: Internationalization of Academic Culture from a Grassroots Perspective"
•    Mara R. Wade and Robert Jenkins, "Forty Years of Austria Illinois Exchange Program: Building an Integrated Program"
•    Whitney C. Kay, "Student Perceptions of Language Learning During a One-Month Study Abroad Program"

Matthew Rosenstein, Associate Director of the European Union Center, was also in attendance at the conference, as were several Austrian and Illinois students from the AIEP. Participation by Illinois participants in this conference was generously supported by the Austrian Fulbright Commission, Universität Wien, Teaching Advancement Board, European Union Center, Study Abroad Office, and the Graduate College.
