The End of National European Armies?

The Fourth Annual Transatlantic Security Symposium, held last March as part of the EU Day 2011, asked the question: "Is the European Union headed toward a single, integrated fighting force?" The most recent edition of Swords and Ploughshares, a publication by the Program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security (ACDIS), presents the symposium panelists' published responses to that question.

The topic of EU defense policy is vital not only to European Union security, but to the world at large. With essays by Jean-Yves Haine, Professor of Political Science, University of Toronto; Jolyon Howorth, Visiting Professor of Political Science, Yale University; and Alistair Shepherd, Lecturer of International Politics, Aberystwyth University (UK), the "End of National European Armies?" issue provides insights on a question of international importance.

In addition to this issue, available from the ACDIS website, you can view a webcast of the event and listen to a radio interview with panelist Jolyon Howorth.
