On May 10 2023, in order to celebrate Europe Day, Dr. Emmanuelle Schön-Quinlivan, organized a two-fold online event attended by over 1,700 children aged 8-18 from EU countries.

During the first part of the event, students had the chance to meet and interact with Věra Jourová, Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency. Students were thrilled to ask Ms. Jourová questions concerning EU values and the Schuman Declaration and its “success” towards promoting unity in Europe.

Students were also interested in the more personal sides of her life. So they asked her about her favourite thing from the EU, her feelings when she first found out that she was selected for her current position, and the biggest challenge she had to face during her career. The final question brought out optimism and hope for the future of the EU as an 11-year-old boy from Romania asked her about how students can contribute to spreading the values of the European Union. Ms. Jourová gladly replied to all the questions in a simple and clear way, making everyone feel comfortable asking and listening to her. At the end of her mini “interview” by the students, Ms. Jourová thanked them for their love and support of the EU and launched the Europe Day Quiz, moving, in this way, the event to the second part.

2023 is the third year in a row that the Europe Day quiz has taken place. Teams had to answer three rounds of eight questions. The first round tested students’ knowledge of the EU generally, the second part had to do with famous people from the EU (present and past), and in the final part students had to guess the country in which specific monuments and flags were located. All the participants were very excited as Dr. Schön-Quinlivan had promised wonderful prizes for the top three schools/winners from Ireland and the rest of the EU respectively.

It was definitely a great way to celebrate Europe Day, highlighting unity, collaboration and acceptance.
