Cleaning up Germany’s Vehicle Stock: Strategies to Decarbonize the Passenger Car Fleet

Max Zhu Interview with Professor Bruce Murray and Researcher Kyle Morrison

December 5, 2024

At the COP 27, UN Secretary General Guterres asserted that we are on a highway to climate hell and still have our foot on the gas pedal. His image is apt for our conversation on the recent International Council on Clean Transportation proposal for “Cleaning up Germany’s vehicle stock.“ If implemented, it could constitute a new best practice in removing our foot from the gas pedal and moving on to the exit ramp.

My name is Bruce Murray, retired Illinois in Vienna Programs Director and co-initiator of its Global Sustainability Certificate Program. During the fall of 2024, I had the privilege to interact with Max Zhu. Max is an Illinois Engineering major and GSCP participant currently enrolled in a Vienna University of Technology course on Mediated Architecture for which today’s conversation is a key assignment. Max leads the conversation with Kyle Morrison, ICCT Researcher and co-author of “Cleaning up Germany’s Vehicle Stock.” Kyle is a University of Illinois graduate (Natural Resources and Environmental Science) with a Masters degree from the Humboldt University in Integrated Natural Resource Management.
