12th Illinois EU Studies Conference ("Sustainable Europe") SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

We are pleased to announce the schedule for our 12th Illinois EU Studies Conference ("Sustainable Europe"), which will take place in an online/hybrid format on April 20-22. This year's conference will feature a mix of research panels, invited speakers, a game design workshop, and a symposium on the future of nuclear fusion technology and its environmental, security, and policy implications.

The conference will be held in an online/hybrid format (see the flyer below and the conference program for details). Special pre-conference events:

We are pleased to host Finn S. Willems (Program Officer, Fulbright Foreign Programs) on Tuesday, April 19 at 1 P.M. CDT for an information session for U.S. and EU citizens on applying for research grants through the Fulbright Schuman program. On Wednesday, April 20 at 12 P.M. CDT, we will host a conversation with Dr. Stefan Gehrold, a German Former Member of the European Parliament, on the Parliament's role in drafting common regulations for sustainable finance. Register here: https://go.illinois.edu/MEP_Gehrold.

UIUC Students Compete in Schuman Challenge in Washington, D.C.

 The European Union Center is proud to congratulate the Schuman Challenge team on their performance at the Delegation of the European Union to the United States on Thursday, April 7. Benjamin Nathan (Political Science & 5th-Year MAEUS), Frank Rocco (Political Science), and Nathan Stone (Political Science) presented their policy proposal on how the EU and the US should cooperate in Afghanistan to a panel of judges from the EU Delegation, the Swedish Embassy, and the German military.

UIUC Team Wins Third Place in Midwest Model EU Competition

The University of Illinois team won the third place award at the Midwest Model EU at Indiana University representing Greece this weekend. Illinois students also received several individual awards: Maha Kalota (Political Science, English) won the first prize for her work in the Environment Council, Angitha Bright (Political Science, Brain and Cognitive Science, Philosophy, Computer Science) the second prize in the Foreign Affairs Council, and Dennis Austin (Political Science) the third prize as Prime Minister in the European Council. Chieh Hsu (Physics, Global Studies), Nathaniel O’Halloran (Political Science, History), and Paula Suarez de Cepeda Garcia (International Relations and Foreign Affairs) also performed exceptionally well in the roles of European Commissioner, Economic and Finance Minister, and Justice and Home Affairs Minister. Model European Union is a simulation of several EU institutions in which close to 30 universities from across the US participate. It is organized by the Institute for European Studies at Indiana University. Professor Kostas Kourtikakis (Political Science) selected and mentored the Illinois team. The European Union Center provided financial support.
